Welcome & Overview
Setting up your Trezor® device is a critical step in securing your digital assets. This presentation walks you through what you need to know to begin: unboxing, verifying authenticity, initializing the device, creating and safeguarding your recovery, and using official tools. We emphasize caution, official sources, and small habits that make your crypto experience long-term safe and simple.
Who this is for
This guide is written for new users and for anyone who wants a tidy checklist before they connect a hardware wallet to a machine. It assumes basic experience with a computer or smartphone and a willingness to follow safety steps carefully.
Unboxing & First Impressions
Inspect the Package
When your Trezor® arrives, verify the tamper-evident seals and packaging. Official shipments should include the device, a USB cable, recovery card, and documentation. If anything appears tampered with, contact official Trezor support immediately using the links above rather than proceeding.
Identify Model & Firmware
Check the model printed on the box (e.g., Trezor Model One or Model T) and the serial number inside the device menu after power-up. Before connecting, visit the official Start page for the recommended steps and download the official wallet at Trezor Wallet.
Powering Up & Device Initialization
Connect Carefully
Use the supplied USB cable and connect to a trusted computer. Avoid public or unknown USB hubs. If possible, update your computer’s OS and run any recommended security tooling before connecting. Official setup often prompts you to update firmware—only accept updates when they come from official firmware endpoints.
Follow On-Screen Prompts
Your Trezor will guide you through creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one. If creating a new wallet, the device will generate a recovery seed. This seed is the single most important piece of information—treat it like a bank vault key.
Recovery Seed: Creation & Safety
Write It Down
When the device shows the recovery words, write them on the provided card (or a secure metal backup). Do not take photos or store the seed on a connected device or cloud service. Once recorded, test the backup by using the device’s optional recovery check.
Keep Multiple Backups
Consider keeping two geographically separated copies (for example, safe deposit box + home safe). Never share your seed with anyone. Official support will never ask for it.
PIN & Passphrase — Layered Protection
Set a PIN
The PIN prevents physical access from being enough to drain funds. Choose a PIN you can remember but not trivial to guess. The Trezor device will scramble input on the device screen so observers can't easily deduce the PIN.
Optional Passphrase
Advanced users may enable a passphrase (a 25th word effectively) which creates a hidden wallet. This adds strong protection but also increases complexity—if you forget the passphrase you may permanently lose access to funds. Use official documentation to understand tradeoffs.
Using Trezor Wallet & Transactions
Verify Addresses on Device
Every time you receive or send funds, verify addresses on the Trezor screen. Do NOT rely solely on your computer’s screen; malware can substitute addresses silently. The device's display is the source of truth.
Firmware & App Updates
Keep the device firmware and official wallet updated. Updates patch vulnerabilities and add features. Only use the firmware and apps available from trezor.io or the official wallet link above.
Troubleshooting & Common Pitfalls
Device Not Recognized
Try another USB cable, check drivers on your OS, or use a different computer. Use the official Support page for platform-specific steps.
Fake Pages & Phishing
Bookmark official links and always verify URLs before entering sensitive data. Bookmark https://trezor.io/start and start there when in doubt.
Best Practices & Long-Term Care
Physical Security
Treat the device and recovery backups like high-value physical assets. Keep them away from humidity, extreme temperatures, and unauthorized hands.
Operational Habits
Practice sending small test transactions before large transfers. Maintain a clean computing environment—avoid installing questionable browser extensions or software that could intercept transactions.
